Piano Moving – The Impossible Job Made Possible
Many of us remember a TV programme or film in which someone insists that moving a piano is easy – and it almost always ends in comedy or disaster. There are two lessons to take from those scenes. First, don’t let pride get the better of your judgement. Second, piano removals are no joke. Getting a piano out of any building can be daunting, and getting it into another one can be even harder. Whatever your situation, piano removals are a job best left to professionals. However, if you prefer to move a piano yourself, here are some tips.
Tips for Piano Removals
If you plan to move a piano or another large object, always be well informed. The number one tip for piano removals, or any job of this size, is: do your research! Pianos are very heavy, so moving one can be dangerous. As well as the risk of injury, there is a risk of damaging, scratching or gouging the piano. Refinishing or repairing a piano can cost as much as replacing it, so it is best to avoid that situation.
- Get help – as mentioned, piano removals are risky by nature. It is not a one-person job, and trying to make it one can be very dangerous. Ask for at least four people – five or six if possible.
- The right tools make life easier – a few tools make piano removals a little easier. The most important is a piano trolley or dolly with a high enough weight capacity. Heavy-duty straps to secure the piano to the trolley also give you a good grip.
- Protect the piano – use blankets, cushions under the blankets, more blankets, and bubble wrap for good measure. Piano removals need delicacy, gentleness and finesse. Pad the piano to protect it from gouges and scratches.
- Protect the keyboard – close and lock the keyboard lid so it can’t open accidentally and leave the very fragile keys exposed to damage. WARNING: don’t use tape on the wood surface, as it will damage it!
- Lift the piano correctly – never lift a piano by its legs. Laying a piano on its side is bad for its mechanism, so avoid that too. We suggest wrapping a strap around the whole piano, with a person lifting and supporting at each end, and four more people in the middle for balance.
Professional Piano Removals
We strongly recommend hiring a professional for piano removals. A piano removal company will be experienced in every aspect of relocating a piano – keeping it safe, lifting it, transporting it and putting it back in place – all of which involve complications an inexperienced person won’t foresee. A professional service also lets you choose an insured company that takes responsibility if something goes wrong. When looking for the right piano removals specialist, consider:
- Insurance cover
- Storage facilities
- Door-to-door service
- Safe transport
- Placement at the delivery address
- Security procedures
- Hidden fees
The bottom line: make sure you have done your research before any piano removal.
